Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship – Discipline: Health Care.  Award: $20,000 per year renewable.  Requirements: Classification as a current high school senior.  Residency in Gaston County or a CarolMont Health employee. Scholastic Achievement:  GPA of at least 3.75, unweighted. Interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree in a healthcare profession.  Demonstration of strong school and community involvement through volunteerism. Deadline:  December 15, 2019

The Navy Reserve Officers Training Program (Navy ROTC)  is a multi-year program that runs concurrently with a student’s normal college or university educational course of study.  In addition to attending academic workload, students attend classes in Naval Science, participate in drill, physical training and other activities of a military officer.  This 4-year scholarship can be used at UNC-CH, NC State, Duke as well as The Citadel, USC, Georgia State and other schools outside of North Carolina. John F. Kennedy Profile Courage Essay Contest:  Discipline:  General. Award:  First place winner receives $10,000.  Second place winner receives $1,000. Five finalists receive $500 each.  Requirements: Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born.  Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level.  Deadline:  January 4, 2020.  Contact:

NC Hispanic College Scholarship Fund:  Discipline:  General. Award:  $500 to $2,500 per year renewable.  Requirements: Must be a graduate of a NC high school within the past 2 years.  Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. Candidate accepted to a community college or a 2 or 4 year college/university.  Deadline:  January 15, 2020.

Seton Hall – Dr. Martin Luther King:  Discipline:  General. Award:  Full tuition and fees.  Requirements: Open to minority students; must show academic achievement and community service, upholding the values of Dr. King.  Deadline:  January 15, 2020.
Washington Crossing Foundation:  Discipline:  Government Service   Award: $500 – $5,000 Scholarships.  Requirements: US citizens who are planning careers in government or military service.  Must write a one-page essay stating why he or she is planning a career in government or military service.  “History buffs” and seniors who enjoy politics are encouraged to enter. Hart Award:  Discipline:  General Award:  $1,000 renewable for one additional year at a community college.  Requirements: Based on good moral character, financial need, academic ability/achievement, community service, extracurricular activities and/or work experience.  Deadline:  January, 25, 2020

NC Teaching Fellows – Discipline:  Teacher Education at Elon, Meredith, NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill or UNC-Charlotte.  Award: $8,250 per year in forgivable loans STEM or Special Education teaching areas.  Requirements: HS senior, unweighted 3.0 or better GPA, 24 on ACT or 1170 on SAT; be willing to teach in a NC public traditional or charter school, must teach science, technology, engineering, math or special education.  Deadline:  January 13, 2020

Hispanic College Fund:  Discipline:  General Award:  Amount varies. Requirements:  Be of Hispanic Heritage. Have a minimum 2.5 GPA, graduate from NC high school, two recommendations required; parents’ 1040 information from taxes.  Deadline:  January 15, 2020

Captain John G. Gardner,USMC, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Scholarship:  Discipline:  General. AwardL  Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Requirements: Must be a relative or descendant (which can include children, step-children, and grandchildren) of an active-duty decorated Vietnam veteran.  Based on proof of medal decoration, demonstrated financial need, sound academic performance and plans to continue education.
