First Grade Community Service Project

Who: Harvey’s Heroes- animal rescue group dedicated to pet adoption. They take unwanted, abandoned, abused, or stray pets and attempt to find suitable homes for them. They are created and run by volunteers, who take the animals into their homes and care for them, including training, playing, handling medical issues, and solving behavior problems until a suitable permanent home can be found.
They pull the dogs that are deemed unadoptable to rescue from primarily Gaston County Animal Control.

Location: Gastonia, NC

Our Animal Habitat Unit will begin in March.
We want to reach out to the community and help take care of unwanted animals.
Teach students about taking care of animals.

Items they need:

Dog food for:
Water/food bowls
Monetary donations are always appreciated in any amount to help cover medical costs.

Ways to get your child involved:

Let them “sponsor” a dog-

Let your child choose one or all, of the pictures of the dogs attached, tape it to an empty cup or jar, allow them to earn money for tasks around your home over the next couple of weeks.  Have them send in the money or take them to the store to purchase items on the list with the money they earned.
Allow them to pick out the items they would like to donate from the list-

Talk with them first before you go shopping and take the pictures with you.
Talk to your child about the importance of taking care of animals-

We will be learning about animals, how all animals need shelter, food and water to survive.

Below is a helpful website: Martha is a shelter dog who eats alphabet soup and then has the ability to talk.

Books to introduce the concept of rescuing animals to children-

Please turn in all items by Friday, February, 14th.

Monetary donations should be sent in your child’s folder in a bag labeled -Harvey’s Heroes- CSP.

There will be a box in the vestibule for you to drop off items that are too large for your child to carry. Please label the item you drop off with your child’s teacher’s name.

There will also be a box in front of each classroom for items your child can carry in themselves.
