Senior Spotlight: Deborah Matute

Piedmont senior, Deborah Matute, will attend Winthrop in Fall 2019 to pursue music education. Christian music is her favorite. She would like to be a music worship leader. On March 30th, she will audition for scholarship and music program entry. Chorus teacher, Mrs. Painter, will join her as an accompanist on the piano. Mrs. Painter is her favorite teacher. Deborah has been singing since she was four years old. Last year, as the worship team apprentice for Amy Quinn, Deborah learned collaboration skills to pair the best music with the congregation and skills of the choir. She enjoys being on the worship team at Liberty Baptist Church.

Volunteering at the Special Olympics has been her favorite community service project. Each year, National Honor Society pairs their students with an athlete to help them move from event to event. She also serves on the Junior Heart Board, which promotes heart health.

As the second oldest of four children, Deborah encourages students, “Your teachers care about you and just want to see you succeed.” Mrs. Wooten has been mentoring Deborah to sharpen teaching skills. When she leaves for college, Deborah says she will greatly miss connecting with her Piedmont friends, especially Emily Smart. Deborah is the portrait of a Piedmont graduate.
