Senior Spotlight: Isabel Walter

Piedmont senior, Isabel Walter is known for always giving her best with a smile.  She likely will attend UNC-Charlotte and major in Finance or Mathematics.

Known for always lending a hand, Isabel has served the school as Student Body President of Student Council, President of Junior Heart Board, Coordinator for Gaston Youth Census Committee, and Project coordinator of the Environmental Club.  She is so hardworking that her leadership duties often cross paths.  At Homecoming, she paused from her role on Dance Team to step in as the Student Council emcee, announcing the Homecoming Court and winners.  As a four year member of the Patriot Pride academic club’s highest standing, Isabel was asked to help plan and emcee those quarterly events celebrating high school academic performance. Isabel served as President of the National Honor Society (NHS). She is required, like all NHS members, to serve the community and school with 22 hours community service a year.  The NHS service varies from volunteering at the Special Olympics to collecting food for the needy to tutoring students.  It is no surprise that Isabel’s advice for freshmen is to get involved.

During the end of year, high school academic award ceremonies that she has attended, she’s won nine awards for excellence in her courses. Last year, Isabel was one of only 13 students from Gaston County who were chosen to attend the North Carolina Governor’s School.  She was Piedmont’s Tar Heel Girls’ State representative before heading to Governor’s School for Social Science.  Her high academic achievement procured her 2019 QuestBridge College Prep Scholar nomination.  Isabel’s favorite class was part of the dual enrollment program at Gaston College. It was Dr. Hayes’ Criminal Justice and Corrections class, which was taught on Piedmont’s secondary campus.  When asked about her favorite teacher, she smiles broadly and shares, “Definitely Mrs. Walter! She has always been like a mom to me.”

Participation in extracurricular programs helped Isabel’s character shine.  She was a founding member of Piedmont’s girls golf team.  In 2019, Isabel earned a Best Featured Performer Nomination in the Blumey Awards and an Excellence in Acting Award at the NC Theater Conference.  She was President of Piedmont Patriot Historians and the Foreign Language Club.  Despite the fact that Isabel had such a long list of responsibilities, her biggest legacy is how she made everyone around her feel- respected, appreciated and valued.  Isabel demonstrates a maturity that seems far beyond her years.  She is the Portrait of a Piedmont graduate.
